UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond Spider baseball alum and former NCAA batting champion Sean Casey is set to play for the Detroit Tigers in the 2006 Major League Baseball World Series which begins Saturday, Oct. 21, in Detroit, Mich. The Tigers' first baseman is a Richmond Athletics Hall of Famer and still ranks among the Spiders' all-time career and single-season offensive leaders.
Casey was drafted in the second round of the 1995 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians before making his major-league debut with the Indians Sept. 12, 1997. He was acquired by the Cincinnati Reds a day before Opening Day 1998, and played for the Reds for eight years from 1998-2005. He was acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates in December of 2006 and later traded to the Tigers midway through the 2006 season.
Since arriving in Detroit, Casey played in 53 regular-season games and hit .245 with five homeruns and 30 driven in. During the Tigers' 2006 postseason success, Casey has played in five games and is hitting .350 with three doubles and four RBI.
While at Richmond, Casey led the nation as a junior in 1995 with a .461 average. His .824 slugging percentage for the Spiders in 1995 still ranks No. 1 on the all-time list. Casey's career slugging percentage of .669 is also second-best all-time at Richmond.
Casey becomes the fourth-player in Richmond baseball history to compete in the World Series along with Spider alums Lew Burdette (`50 Yankees), Renie Martin (`80 Royals) and Brian Jordan (`99 Braves).
