Richmond Head Coach Chris Mooney
On the improvement of the freshman:
"It's great for us to be able to win a couple games here to start with so much youth. It hopefully speeds up the learning process."
On getting the freshmen ready to play:
"We've talked a lot with our freshman; they have the privilege of playing college basketball earlier and more than most kids. With that comes a responsibility."
On American
"American is such a good, solid, veteran team, we were having trouble guarding them and to be honest I think they missed some shots that they usually make. So that helped us."
On Coming Back
"Even when we were down seven we committed ourselves to throwing the ball inside, running our offense through our center, and we were able to score inside. Dan (Geriot) certainly can score inside, Pete (Thomas) had a big basket underneath and Jarhon (Giddings) had a big one. When guys can score underneath it softens up the defense on perimeter and gives us open looks."
On Getting the Ball To Center Dan Geriot
"That's kind of what we're always trying to do, get the ball inside. It shows up more with Dan because there's just something about him. He's a good target, he's not the biggest guy in the world, but he's a good target. Guys our comfortable throwing the ball everywhere to him because he has good hands. We're just trying to say run the same thing every time down, run our offense through the center."
On The Freshmen's Poise
"I think it's impressive for playing with so many freshmen. Peter (Thomas) and Jarhon (Giddings) do a great job keeping us poised, but I think for that many of the freshmen have a confidence, they think they're good players, and they are. So what you have when you're confident is you're a little more poised and composed and you've seen these situations before. I'm very impressed with it and hope it continues."
Richmond Senior Peter Thomas
On the poise of the freshmen in the first two games:
"In games like tonight, young players grow up quickly. These guys are handling it as well as freshmen can be expected too."
On Richmond's defensive intensity down the stretch:
"When it counts, at the end of the game so far, we've been able to play good defense."
Richmond Freshman Dan Geriot
On expectations with so many young players:
"I think we have to be ahead of where we were expected to be. We know that we have to play as veteran-like as we can."
On Coming Back In The First Two Games
"We have come-from-behind victories in both games, not what usual freshmen do. As coach Mooney says, we have to grow up fast because. With the injuries that puts even more emphasis on us being composed. We need to just run our offense, and it's looking pretty good. We can all hit shots."
On His Second-Half Performance
"It was tough to score over them because they were bigger and stronger, but once I got composed, slowed down and stopped rushing, I was able to get to the basket."
Richmond Freshman Brian Morris
On keeping focus when trailing in the second half:
"I think we kept playing hard, we didn't get down on ourselves. I think we were just as composed as they were and we got baskets when we needed to."
On freshmen taking big shots and the end of games:
"A lot of times when we're taking those big shots, it's through our offense. It's more of just us being able to play within our offense. What we do is designed to allow anyone to score at anytime. Like that last shot I hit, Peter set a screen for me to get open, so it was a senior making a play, he got me open."
American Coach Jeff Jones
On the Richmond freshmen:
"Their freshmen made big time plays. [Dan] Geriot and Brian Morris really stepped up. It's amazing to see that many freshman running the offense the way they do. Granted they didn't for the entire game, but those guys looked awfully cohesive out there."
On Dan Geriot's play:
"Geriot caught the ball inside and took his time, didn't rush and converted. All things that we wanted to do and couldn't."
