Ward Named Offensive Rookie Of The Year; Goloboski And Campbell Earn A-10 First Team Honors

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Redshirt freshman Eric Ward garnered Richmond's second-straight A-10 Rookie of the Year honor, while seniors Adam Goloboski and Johnny Campbell picked up First Team All-Atlantic 10 accolades as announced by the league office Tuesday. Ward, who garnered A-10 Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, follows junior Sherman Logan, who was named the A-10 Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2005.
Ward ended his first season as the Spiders' quarterback with an efficiency rating 124.8 behind 1,424 yards passing and 11 touchdowns. The Atlanta, Ga., native who started 10 of Richmond's 11 games, also rushed for 130 yards on 57 carries and scored two touchdowns on the ground. Ward was named A-10 Rookie of the Week twice during the season, the first time after leading the Spiders to a 13-0 win at Division I Duke to open the season. The SW Dekalb High School graduate was 11-for-23 for 120 yards and a touchdown through the air, while running for 14 yards on nine carries against the Blue Devils. In his final game of the 2006 season, Ward completed a season-high 21 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns against William & Mary, on his way to another Rookie of the Week honor.
Goloboski ended his collegiate career by garnering 100+ tackles in three-straight seasons, and recorded 20 games of 10-or-more tackles. The Hereford, Md., native made 108 stops in 2006, after garnering 131 in the 2005 and 116 in 2004. The two-time A-10 first teamer ended his career with a total of 406 tackles, the fourth-best total in Richmond history. His 9.8 tackles per game average to end the season is third-best in the conference, garnering 56 solo tackles and 52 assisted stops.
Campbell, a preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2006, logged 34 tackles in 2006, including nine for loss and three sacks. The Richmond, Va., native finished his career with 104 stops in four seasons, including 23 behind the line of scrimmage for a total of 102 yards lost. The Douglas Freeman High School alum recorded 13.5 sacks in his four-year career, just one away for the Richmond all-time Top-10 list.
Seniors Lance Gray and Judd Altman, junior Arman Shields and redshirt freshman David Horton all earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Gray and Horton were part of a defense which ranked third in the A-10 giving up a total of 268.7 yards a game. Gray ended his career with a total of 321 tackles, just two away from Richmond's all-time Top-10 list. Horton was pressed into action after sophomore Seth Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Macungie, Pa., native finished the season with a team-high 10 pass breakups and logged three interceptions for a total of 20 yards and a touchdown.
Altman anchored an offensive line which allowed just 15 sacks, third fewest in the Atlantic 10. Altman also helped the Spiders gain 3,860 yards of total offense which is the 10th-best total in Richmond football history. Shields ended his third full season with a team-high 643 receiving yards and five touchdown catches. His 54 catches in 2006 ranks as the ninth-highest total in school history. The Washington, D.C., native ranks seventh on the Spiders' career receiving yards list with 1,805, while his 13 career touchdown receptions are tied for eighth-best ever at Richmond.
Juniors Sherman Logan and Tim Silver all earned Third Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Hightower, who was at one time leading the Atlantic 10 in rushing, ended the 2006 season with an average of 77.3 yards per game to rank sixth in the league. His 101.7 all-purpose yard average was also among the best in the A-10 this season, ranking eighth on the Top-10 list.
Logan ended his second full season of collegiate football with a total of 52 tackles, including 10 for loss and three sacks. The Virginia Beach, Va., native, also a Preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection, will go into his senior season in 2007 with 14 career sacks, already just half a sack from placing his name on the all-time career Top-10 list.
Silver, along with Altman on the offensive front, helped establish a young offensive unit which ended the season ranking sixth among the Atlantic 10 in total offense. The Spiders rushed for 1,794 yards which ranked fifth-best in the conference, while allowing Ward and sophomore Levi Brown to throw for 2,066 yards which ranks as the ninth-best single-season total in Richmond history.
