WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Richmond led by 13 points at the half, but Wake Forest made 20-of-32 field goals in the second half on the way to a 72-59 victory Friday at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
After falling behind 13-6, the Spiders (4-6) went on a 27-5 run and would lead by as many as 15 points on two occasions in the closing minutes first half. Richmond held the Demon Deacons (7-4) to 35-percent shooting in the first half and just one field goal in the final 12 minutes of the half.
"We played very well in the first half," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "I thought our defense was excellent, they were having trouble getting good shots, and we were running our offense very well."
The second half was a different story as Wake Forest scored 10 points in the first 2:08 after intermission, with eight of those points coming on lay-ups. The Demon Deacons turned up the defensive pressure, regaining the lead with 11:54 to play and never letting it go.
"They clearly turned up the heat in the second half and I don't think our freshmen handled it well enough," Mooney said. "They resisted it in patches, but they could not totally resist it."
`Freshman Dan Geriot led the Spiders with 21 points, making 8-of-10 field goals. It was the sixth time in 10 college games that Geriot has scored 18 points or more. Freshman David Gonzalvez reached double-figures for the third-straight game with 12 points.
The Spiders shot 60 percent from the field for the game, but took just 40 shots. Richmond turned the ball over 23 times, 14 of them coming in the second half.
Wake Forest's Kyle Visser led the Demon Deacons with 17 points, while L.D. Williams scored 16 points and Ishmael Smith had 13.
Richmond will break for the holidays and return to action on Dec. 28 when the Spiders host Tulane in the Robins Center at 7 p.m. That game is part of a doubleheader with the Richmond women's basketball team, which hosts Marshall at 4:30 p.m.
