UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond baseball team has announced it has finalized its 2007 schedule. The Spiders will face a total of three NCAA Tournament teams with two coming in the first month of the slate, including a non-conference roadtrip to Wichita, Kan., to face the Wichita State Shockers.
"This is definitely a great schedule for the University of Richmond baseball squad," head coach Ron Atkins said. "It might be one of the toughest we have had here in the last 10 seasons."
Richmond will open its season in the same fashion it has for several seasons with a trip to Charleston, S.C. The Spiders will face The Citadel, South Carolina and Liberty in The Citadel Shootout, Feb. 16-17, at Riley Park. South Carolina will be the first of three NCAA Tournament teams on the Spiders' schedule in 2007. The Gamecocks advanced to 2007 Super Regional in Athens, Ga., where it lost to the Georgia Bulldogs in three games.
Following the season-opening tournament, Richmond returns home for a four-game season-opening homestand, Feb. 21-25. The Spiders will host VMI in their first home game of the season, Feb. 21, then welcome Delaware to Pitt Field for a three-game set beginning Feb. 23.
Richmond then travels west to take on the Shockers in a three-game series at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan., March 2-4. After another road game at William & Mary March 6, the Spiders return to Pitt Field for a nine-game homestand, their longest of the season.
"We are very excited to get the opportunity to go out to play one of the most storied college baseball programs in the country in Wichita State," Atkins added. "We have never played the Shockers before and are looking forward to the opportunity."
The Spiders open Atlantic 10 play on the road, March 23-25, at Rhode Island. The following weekend, Richmond hits the road for another A-10 series at George Washington (March 30-April 1). Richmond's first Atlantic 10 series at Pitt Field in 2007 will feature the Xavier Musketeers, April 6-8.
Following the Xavier series, Richmond will travel to Duquesne (April 20-22), Massachusetts (May 4-6) and Saint Joseph's (May 11-13) in remaining A-10 road series. The Spiders will also host A-10 series at Pitt Field against Temple (April 13-15), Fordham (April 27-29) and the final regular-season series in head Coach Ron Atkins' career against Charlotte (May 17-19).
Also on the 2007 schedule are home-and-home games with George Mason (March 21 & April 25), James Madison (March 28 & May 9), Old Dominion (March 14 & 27), Virginia (March 20 & April 17), VCU (April 3 & May 15) and Virginia Tech (March 7 & April 10).
The 2007 Atlantic 10 Tournament will consist of the top six teams in the conference, and will be played May 23-26 at a site to be determined. The Atlantic 10 Tournament Champion as well as any at-large bid recipients will begin NCAA Regional play June 1-4. NCAA Super Regionals are scheduled for June 8-11, and the NCAA College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb., is set to take place June 15-25.
