UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's basketball team, coming off a victory at Big East member South Florida, will host city-rival VCU on Saturday night in the Farm Bureau Insurance Black & Blue Classic at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center.
The Spiders (4-3) welcome the Rams (6-2) back to the Robins Center for the first time since 2003. VCU won the last two meetings downtown at the Siegel Center.
The game will feature two contrasting styles as VCU will look to apply full-court pressure and push the tempo, while the Spiders will look to get into their half-court offense and pressure the Rams with a half-court match-up zone defense that held South Florida to 46 points on Tuesday night.
VCU leads the all-time series 36-24, but the Spiders have won five of the last six meetings in the Robins Center including a 70-52 victory in the Rams last visit to the West End on Dec. 3, 2003.
Richmond freshman Dan Geriot leads the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game and senior Peter Thomas is second on the team at 11.4 points per game, after scoring a career-high 19 in the win over USF. The Spiders are 3-2 in the Robins Center this season and 14-7 in the building under head coach Chris Mooney.
VCU has won four-straight games and is averaging 76.8 points per game. B.A. Walker leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game, while Eric Maynor is second on the team at 14.3 and Jesse Pellot-Rosa is third at 14.1 points per game. VCU is allowing just 61.6 points per game and forcing 20.4 turnovers per game.
Richmond will be playing their last game before a 10-day layoff for exams. The Spiders will host VMI on Dec. 20 at 7 p.m.
