CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The University of Richmond men's golf team led after one round of the Birkdale Collegiate and is in second place after two rounds played Friday on the par-72, 7,013-yard Birkdale Golf Club.
The third and final of the 54-hole event will be played on Saturday morning.
The Spiders shot a 5-over par 293 in the first round and then a 16-over 304 in the second round for a 21-over 597. Charlotte, the tournament's defending champion, shot a 10-over-par 298, but then responded with a 2-under 286 in the afternoon to hold a 13-shot lead on Richmond.
"We beat Charlote in the morning round and that's huge because they are ranked in the top 30 in the country," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "It's exciting to be competitive with them.
Richmond sophomore Chris Bagley shot a 1-under par 71 in the morning round and a 3-over par 75 in the afternoon to sit in a tie for third at 2-over-par 146. Sophomore Billy Hanes is tied for eighth at 4-over-par 148. He shot a 4-over-par 76 in the morning round and an even-par 72 in the afternoon.
Sophomore Jordan Utley is tied for 23rd at 9-over 153, including a 1-over-par 73 in the morning round. Junior John Pelet and freshman Tim Courtney are tied for 36th at 12-over-par 156. Pelet shot 79-77 and Courtney went 73-83.
"It was really windy out there, I'm happy with the way we played in the wind in the first round," Decker said. "It's a little disappointing to not come back a little stronger in second round, but we have 18 holes left and the goal is to stay competitive with our A-10 foe Charlotte."
