Richmond finished with an 11-5 home record, their most home victories since 2002-03. It is the sixth time in the last nine seasons that Richmond has won 10 or more games at home and the 15th time in the 34-year history of the Robins Center.
This was the first time this season that Richmond trailed with five minutes to play in the game, but came back to pull off the victory. The five-point second-half deficit that the Spiders erased was the second largest second-half deficit overcome by Richmond. Richmond trailed Dayton by six points in a 58-50 victory on Jan. 14. This was the Spiders third victory against 14 losses when trailing at the half.
Senior Kevin Steenberge's three-point play with six seconds left was his team-leading 11th old-fashioned three-point play of the season. Richmond completed four three-point plays Saturday, with Oumar Sylla notching two and Gaston Moliva finishing another.
Richmond is 4-0 in games decided by five points or less.
The Spiders improved to 2-0 in the month of March and are 13-8 outside the month of February this season.
Richmond was picked to finish 11th in the Atlantic 10 by the preseason poll and the coaches and media were right on as the Spiders finished in 11th.
The Spiders scored a season-high 39 first-half points, but gave up a season-high 40 first-half points.
Senior Jermaine Bucknor made at least three 3-pointers for the 12th time this season and the 23rd time in his career. The Spiders are 10-2 this season when he makes at least three 3-pointers in a game.
The Spiders scored 65 points for the second-straight game and improved to a perfect 13-0 when they score 58 points or more.
With his three 3-pointers Saturday night, Bucknor moved into sole possession of fifth place on Richmond's all-time career list for 3-pointers. He has 149 for his career, having passed Jarod Stevenson (148). His 65 3-pointers this season is 10th on the school's single-season list. Bucknor made 64 treys last season, which had shared the 10th spot with former Spider Reggie Brown.
Richmond made eight 3-pointers in the game, the eighth time this season the Spiders made at least eight treys in a game.
Sophomore Drew Crank tied a career high with 10 points and two 3-pointers.
Bucknor played a career-high 40 minutes for the second time this season and scored in double figures for the 21st time this season and the 41st time in his career.
Steenberge reached double figures for the 15th time this season and the 38th time in his career.
Moliva made a 3-pointer for the fifth time in the last seven games. He blocked two shots to give him 103 for his career, which ranks fifth on the school's all-time list.
Due to being short-handed with just seven scholarship players in uniform, Richmond had two freshman walk-ons play in the first half. Freshman Duncan McLean is averaging 13.4 minutes per game, but fellow freshman walk-on Mark McGonigal got one minute of action in the first half. He also played in the first half against Saint Joseph's on Feb. 25.
Steenberge made 5-of-7 shots from the field and is currently 10th on the school's list for career field goal percentage at 52.6 percent, just behind Kelvin Johnson (1981-85) who shot 52.7 percent.
