PINEHURST, N.C. - The University of Richmond women's golf team had a 16-shot improvement in the second round of the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship, but the Spiders still sit in fifth place entering Sunday's final round at Pinehurst No. 6.
Richmond shot a 316 Saturday after a 332 in Friday's first round. The Spiders remain in fifth place, but are just one stroke out of fourth place and five strokes out of third. UNC Wilmington had a 30-shot improvement from yesterday, shooting a 301 Saturday to jump from fourth-place to second at 632. Georgia State maintains its hold on the lead at 628.
"We played better, but there's still room for improvement," Richmond head coach Leighann Rastede said. "We hope to make up some more ground tomorrow."
William and Mary shot a 325 Saturday and is in third place at 643, five shots ahead of the Spiders. James Madison is in fourth place at 647, on shot ahead of Richmond.
Richmond seniors Lauren Ritter and Lesley Monachino are tied for 10th place, each at 18-over par 160. Monachino fired a 7-over 78 on the par-71, 5,944-yard course on Saturday after shooting an 82 Friday.
"Lesley is playing great," Rastede said. "She is playing each shot one at a time which is the epitome of how a senior should be playing."
Ritter, who was tied for seventh after carding an 81 in the first round, shot a 79 Saturday, but dropped three spots to 10th.
Freshman Rosario Germino is tied for 18th at 21-over par 163 after shooting and 80 Saturday. Junior Ashley Lambert, who was named Second-Team All-CAA on Friday, rebounded from a first-round 86 to shoot an 8-over 79 and sit in a tie for 20th at 165. Sophomore Alex Latimer is tied for 30th at 176 after shooting an 83 on Saturday.
The third and final round of the 2006 CAA Championship will be played Sunday at Pinehurst No. 6. Richmond's tee times begin at 11:55 a.m.
