MONROEVILLE, Pa. - Junior Beatrice Grasu was a straight-sets winner at No. 1 singles after pairing with Robin Carter to win at the second doubles flight to lead top-seeded Richmond to a 4-0 victory over Charlotte and its third consecutive Conference title on Sunday at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship, held at the Club 4 Life's indoor tennis facility in Monroeville, PA.
"We added four new student-athletes to the team this season after losing our Nos. 1 and 3 singles players and were still pretty dominating," said Richmond head coach Mark Wesselink, who guided the Spiders (14-7) to their fourth A-10 title in five seasons. "They have worked really hard and have fit right in with our team, so I feel good about our prospects for the future."
Grasu registered a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Charlotte senior Ofra Friedman at first singles, while teammates Ashlee Vosters and Jessica Hubbard each earned two-set wins at Nos. 5-6 singles. The Spiders opened the match by seizing the doubles point as Carter and Grasu edged Koren Fleming and Ali Picante at the No. 2 flight, 8-6.
"Beatrice was sidelined for most of last season due to injury so it was extremely exciting for her to win the clinching singles match for the team," said Wesselink. "She played a great match and I am so happy for her because she just loves to play."
