Spiders Drop Game Two To Saint Joseph's, 6-3

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - A three-run first inning helped lift Saint Joseph's to a series-tying win Saturday at Pitt Field over the Spiders, 6-3. Richmond, which scored three runs on 10 hits, falls to 17-26 overall and 8-9 in the A-10 with the loss. Freshman Ian Marshall will get the ball for the Spiders in the rubber-game of the three-game set Sunday. First pitch is slated for noon.
The Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first off sophomore Alex Hale thanks to an RBI-double from Jeremy Jakubowski and a two-run homer from Matt Godusky. Hale allowed one more run in the third before finishing out his start with five-straight scoreless. The Omaha, Neb., native gave up four runs on eight hits and three walks in eight innings, while fanning six.
Richmond answered back in the second with an RBI-single from junior Anthony Sandstrom, who finished the day 2-for-4 with an RBI. An RBI-groundout from sophomore Joe Mahoney pushed another run across in the third for Richmond closing the gap to 4-2.
SJU's Jason Hessler was solid in his 6.2-inning start. The righthander surrendered just three runs on nine hits, while fanning five. The Spiders pushed their third and final run of the game over in the seventh when Mahoney doubled in senior Ben Zeskind from second. Zeskind ended his day by going 3-for-5 with two runs, extending his hit streak to 21 games.
After a defensive gem in the outfield by Saint Joe's leftfielder Ben Wendle, SJU posted two insurance runs off Richmond reliever senior Derek Duclos in the ninth. Another web gem in the outfield from Wendle followed by two groundouts gave the Hawks and Hessler a 6-3 win, and Mark Imbo his sixth save.
Richmond will look for the series win in Sunday's rubber-game of the series at Pitt Field. Freshman Ian Marshall (2-2, 8.80 ERA) will face Saint Joseph's Jeff Williams (2-5, 4.02 ERA) in a game slated to get underway at noon.
Game Notes:
-- Senior Ben Zeskind extended his hit streak to 21 games with a double in the third.
-- Senior Andrew Justice extended his hit streak to 20 games with a single in the second. Justice left the game with leg injury in the eighth. The Henderson, N.C., native landed on the first-base bag awkwardly trying leg-out an infield hit. Justice's status will be determined Sunday.
-- Junior Anthony Sandstrom returned to the lineup Saturday to go 2-for-4 with an RBI.
-- Senior Ben Zeskind has now recorded multiple hits in seven of the last eight ballgames.
-- Richmond's offense has garnered 10 or more hits in 12 of the last 13 games.
