STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. - The University of Richmond women's golf team is just 12 strokes off the lead after the first round of the John Kirk/Lady Panther Intercollegiate played Monday. The second and final round will be played Tuesday.
Richmond is in 10th place out of 14 teams, but trails first-place East Carolina by just 12 strokes in the closely bunched tournament. The Spiders shot a 319 Monday, while East Carolina leads at 307. Coastal Carolina and Memphis are tied for second place at 309 and Kentucky is in fifth at 314. The first round was delayed three hours due to weather.
"It was kind of a long day, but the girls did a good job hanging in there through the delay," Richmond head coach Leighann Rastede said. "Hopefully we can finish strong. Although I'm not disappointed with our play today there were some shots that we left out on the golf course that we should be able to make-up (Tuesday)."
Richmond senior Lauren Ritter is tied for fifth after shooting a 3-over-par 75 at the par-72, 6,009-yard Eagle's Landing Country Club.
"Lauren played one of her best rounds," Rastede said. "She came out strong and played very well today."
Freshman Rosario Germino is tied for 10th after carding a 5-over 77.
"Rosario had four birdies, she showed a lot to shoot a 77 coming back from some big numbers," Rastede said.
Junior Ashley Lambert shot an 82 and is tied for 50th, sophomore Alex Latimer shot an 85 and is tied for 62nd and senior Leslie Monachino had an 89 to put her in 73rd.
Tuesday's round will be Richmond's last tune-up before the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association Championships to be held April 14-16 in Pinehurst, N.C.
