Men's Golf Finishes Seventh At Marshall Invitational

HUNTINGTON, W.V. - The University of Richmond men's golf team finished seventh out of 15 teams at the Marshall Invitational held Friday and Saturday at the par-71 Guyan Golf and Country Club.The Spiders were in fourth after the first two rounds, both 10-over par 294s, but shot a 13-over 297 in Tuesday's final round to drop to seventh. Richmond finished the tournament at 33-over-par 885, just one stroke behind fellow Atlantic 10 member Rhode Island.
"We would have liked to play a little better today despite the bad conditions," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "Hopefully we can use this experience to our benefit in the last few tournaments."
Eastern Michigan won the tournament at 16-over-par 868, while Ball State (878) took second, Marshall (880) was third. Akron and Marquette tied for fourth at 883.
Richmond sophomore Jordan Utley shot an even-par 71 Tuesday to post his second-straight top-5 finish and fourth of the year. Utley, who has four top-5 finishes in the 2005-06 season, shot a 1-under 70 in the first round and a 74 in the second as he finished the tournament at 2-over-par 215.
Sophomore Chris Bagley tied for 22nd at 8-over-par 221. He shot an even-par 71 in the second round and 75s in both the first and third rounds.
Freshman Tim Courtney tied for 41st at 12-over 225 shooting a 4-over-par 75 in all three rounds. Senior Tyler Randol tied for 46th at 13-over 226 (76-74-76), while sophomore Billy Hanes tied for 72nd at 232 (74-79-79).
Richmond returns to action April 22-23 at the Rutherford Invitational hosted by Penn State, Decker's alma mater. That will be the final tune-up before the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship to be held May 5-7 at Orange County National in Orange County, Fla.
