Kurtain And Young Set School Records At Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. - Richmond senior Nicole Kurtain qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by breaking her own school record and freshman Jessica Young also broke her own school record in the 400 at the Georgia Tech Invitational, held Friday and Saturday.Kurtain ran the 3K steeplechase in a new school of 10:49.20, beating her old school mark of 10:52.05. She placed seventh out of 14 competitors.
Young, who had already qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the 400, beat her old school record by finishing in 53.92 seconds Saturday to take seventh. Young also finished ninth in the 200 in a time of 24.07 seconds.
Richmond senior John Ciccarelli narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships in the 3,000 steeplechase, running a 9:09.90, just 2.9 seconds off the qualifying mark. Ciccarelli has come within three seconds of the qualifying mark three different times this season.
Junior Beth Crocus, fresh off being named the Atlantic 10 Championships' Most Outstanding Field Performer after taking conference titles in both the hammer and javelin, finished second in the javelin on Friday with a throw of 138-feet-9.
Crocus also took fourth in the hammer throw on Saturday with a heave of 172-11. She had already qualified for the NCAA Regionals in both events.
Junior Lindsey Smith, the runner-up in the javelin at last weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship, finished sixth in that event on Friday with a toss of 133-7. Smith, who had already qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the event, will be looking for her second-straight NCAA National Championship appearance.
Freshman Jasmine Major ran a 14.79 in the preliminaries of the 100 hurdles and sophomore Jonathan Molz took 41st in the 1,500 in 4:00.17.
