HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team concluded its weekend at the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational with a 2-1 loss on Sunday after Rutgers put in a last minute goal to secure the victory. After 89:16 minutes of play and a goal by Richmond's Julia Bizer, the Spiders endured a hard-fought loss to the Scarlett Knights on Sunday afternoon at the JMU Soccer Complex.
After 50:49 of scoreless first-half action, Rutgers' Courtney Roarty crossed the ball in from the left side to teammate Karla Schacher, who headed it in for the Scarlett Knights' first goal of the game.
Richmond sophomore Julia Bizer answered with her first collegiate goal in the first ten minutes of the second half. Bizer knocked the ball off the Rutgers' keeper into the back of the net from eight yards out off assists from freshman Jen Ruhe and sophomore Melanie Varga.
Just 44 seconds before the final whistle, with the game at a 1-1 stalemate, and the two teams looking at overtime, Rutgers' Gina DeMaio blasted a shot from 25 yards that sailed into the upper 90, out of reach of the Spider keeper, giving the Scarlet Knights a 2-1 advantage.
Rutgers out shot the Spiders 24-8. Freshman Erin Iman recorded four saves in goal for the Spiders, while Erin Guthrie tallied one for the Scarlet Knights.
Bizer, as well as teammate Christine Wrublesky, were named to the NSCAA All-Tournament team.
The Spiders will continue action on Thursday, August 31 as they host the James Madison Dukes at 7:00 p.m. at First Market Stadium. Live coverage for Thursday's contest will be available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.
