PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Richmond women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in the last 43 seconds of the second overtime to Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon at Rhodes Field in the Penn Invitational. Freshman Nora Mann scored her first collegiate goal in the Spiders' efforts.
Richmond put the first score on the board (1-0) in the 37th minute as Mann beat her defender at the 18 to blast a left-footed shot into the upper 90. Less than five minutes into the second half, the Quakers responded with the equalizer (1-1) as Rachel Fletcher took advantage of a miscue in the Spiders' defense and took a shot that sailed into the upper far corner.
Neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities in the remainder of regulation time and the teams headed into overtime. The first overtime passed without any scores and, with the game still tied 1-1 in the final minute of overtime, it seemed as if the game was going to end in a stalemate; however, Penn was able to slip one in before the clock ran out.
With just 43 seconds left on the clock, Penn's Tracy Bienenfeld got the ball at the top of the box and blasted it into the upper corner, handing the Quakers a 2-1 victory and breaking almost 60 minutes of scoreless action.
Both teams played fairly close, with Pennsylvania only outshooting Richmond by one (14-13).
Spider keeper Kate Hudson registered five saves in 110 minutes of action on Sunday, while Cailly Carroll recorded four saves in goal for the Quakers (2-0-1).
The Spiders (0-6-0) resume action this Thursday when they will play host to the Longwood Lancers at 7:00 p.m. at First Market Stadium. Live coverage for Thursday's game will be available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.
