UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - With 90 minutes of regulation time and two 10-minute overtime periods, the Richmond women's soccer team played to a 0-0 knot in its first-ever meeting with Longwood University on Thursday night at First Market Stadium.
"We are disappointed with a tie," stated Richmond head coach Peter Albright. However, he credited several of his players for their performances. "It was a breakout game for Jessie Wolfe and Carter Blair played outstanding. She was tough as nails."
The Spiders and the Lancers played through a scoreless first half which the Spiders dominated, holding a 9-2 advantage in shooting. Nora Mann, Wolfe and Ashleigh Blumer each had two looks on goal in Richmond's first half efforts.
"We played a terrible first half," stated Albright. "We didn't play to feet and we had a lack of confidence in one another.
The Spiders came out with an attacking energy in the second half, firing five shots in the first six minutes and, although they outshot the Lancers once again, they were unable to convert any of their opportunities and the game headed into overtime.
Richmond created several more chances in the overtime periods, with two shots in the first overtime and three in the second, while Longwood struggled to put a shot on the board. After playing through another scoreless twenty minutes, the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
"I was more pleased with the second half and the overtime periods," stated Albright. "We were more intense and there was a significant change in our attitude."
The Spiders ended with a 32-7 shot advantage over the Lancers on Thursday night. "Although we had over 30 shots, we didn't create good quality chances," said Albright.
Richmond's Kate Hudson registers two saves in goal, while Anne Whitmore recorded 14 saves in goal for the Lancers (3-2-2).
The Spiders (0-6-1) will resume action this Sunday in Baltimore, Md., where they will face Loyola at 1:00 p.m.
