CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Richmond women's golf team opened the 2006-07 season Monday with two rounds of the Cougar Classic. While the Spiders are in 17th place in the strong field, they are just four strokes behind defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Georgia State.
The third and final round of the Cougar Classic will be played Tuesday morning at Yeamans Hall.
Playing in the strongest tournament field Richmond will face all season, the Spiders are at 45-over-par 621, one stroke ahead of Kentucky and one shot behind 16th-place Mississippi State. North Carolina-Greensboro and defending CAA champion Georgia State are tied for 14th with 617. North Carolina and LSU are tied for the lead with a 579.
"We don't feel badly about today at all," Richmond head coach Leighann Rastede Albaugh said. "There are some big name teams here, but the girls went out there and played their hearts out. They proved a lot today and we're looking to make a move up tomorrow. The team karma was excellent today."
Three of Richmond's five players were freshman making their collegiate debut, including Victoria Kidder, who leads the Spiders with a 5-over-par 149. Kidder is tied for 31st place after shooting a 3-over-par 75 in the morning round and a 2-over 74 in the afternoon.
"It was tough playing 36 holes in one day because I hadn't done that in a tournament before," Kidder said. "I was striking the ball well in the morning round, but I wasn't hitting any putts. In the afternoon I only took 29 putts, but I wasn't hitting the ball well. It was kind of a scramble, but overall I played pretty well."
Sophomore Rosario Germino is tied for 56th at 10-over-par 154 (78-76) and senior Ashley Lambert is tied for 65th at 13-over 157 (77-80). Freshman Lauren Folgosa is tied for 82nd at 161 and freshman Anne Sprick is in 95th at 178.
"It was definitely a learning experience, to be in that competitive an atmosphere all day" Folgosa said. "It was a very good experience, but I'm definitely looking to improve Tuesday."
The Spiders will begin play in Tuesday's final round at 8:45 a.m. The tournament can be followed by Golfstat's Live Scoring through a link here at RichmondSpiders.com.
