UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Richmond women's golf team hung tough through tough conditions Friday at Penn's State Blue Course and sits in fifth place out of 14 teams after the first round of the 54-hole Nittany Lion Women's Invitational.
"There were really tough conditions and the rough was very tall, but the girls held it together," Richmond head coach Leighann Rastede Albaugh said. "They never got down they didn't start feeling sorry for themselves and think the golf course was too hard. They stayed positive and that's why we are where we are right now, and we're looking to move up tomorrow."
Playing with three freshman in the lineup for the second-straight tournament to start the year, the Spiders scored a 327 and are one stroke behind fourth-place UNC-Greensboro (326). Penn State and Washington are tied for second at 314 and Rollins is the leader in the clubhouse at 313.
Richmond sophomore Rosario Germino is tied for 14th after shooting a 7-over-par 79 on the par-72, 6,300-yard course. Freshman Victoria Kidder is tied for 24th after carding an 81 and junior Ashley Lambert is tied for 33rd with an 83. Freshman Anne Sprick is tied for 39th with an 84 and freshman Lauren Folgosa is tied for 43rd with an 85.
Rollins' Caitlin Barry has the lead after the first round with a 3-over-par 75.
Richmond will play the second round of the three-round tournament on Saturday with a 1:15 p.m. shotgun start.
