ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The University of Richmond women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback on the road at Saint Louis Friday evening. The Spiders saw the defending Atlantic 10 champions strike for an early own goal and hang on for the victory.
The own goal in fourth minute proved to be the difference as Richmond slipped to 3-8-2 overall and 2-2-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Homestanding Saint Louis tacked on an insurance goal in the 26th minute and improved to 7-3-1, 4-0-1.
The own goal resulted from a mis-played clearing attempt in front of goalkeeper Kate Hudson. From the right side, SLU's Kelly Waeckerle put a shot toward the Richmond goal. The ball pin-balled between the keeper and a Richmond defender, and when the defender tried to clear the ball wide, she poked it directly into the center of the goal for a Billikens' goal and a 1-0 lead.
Saint Louis, which remained undefeated (4-0-0) at Hermann Stadium this season, would extend that lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute with the fourth goal of the season from Cassi Winchell. Christina Brown sent a pass to Winchell and her shot ducked under the crossbar from 15 yards out.
Hudson made eight saves, but found herself on the short end of the decision. Her counterpart Hannah Koesterer made eight saves to claim the shutout victory.
Jessie Wolfe ripped a game-high four shots to lead the Spiders, who trailed in overall shots 15-13. The Spiders owned a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Richmond returns to action Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at Charlotte.
