MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - Senior Alex Latimer shot a 77 to lead and is tied for 11th as the Richmond women's golf team is n seventh place after the first round of the Spider Fall Invitational at Independence Golf Club.
Latimer carded a 4-over-par 40 on the front nine and a 1-over 37 on the back to finish the round at 5-over on the par-72, 6,079-yard course.
Richmond carded a 317 to sit four strokes behind sixth-place William & Mary. Maryland is the leader in the clubhouse at 301, followed by a logjam of teams in second through fifth place. Longwood (308), Columbia (308) and Methodist (309) are all within two strokes of second-place Marshall (307).
Freshman Christina Gray, playing in her first collegiate tournament, shot a 6-over 78 and is tied for 16th after carding 39s on each side of the course.
Sophomore Anne Sprick, who has led the Spiders in the last two tournaments, shot a 79 Monday, going 5-over par on the front after bogeying her first four holes. She rebounded to play 1-over for her final 15 holes.
"We had a few good rounds and then I think we left some shots out on the golf course," Richmond head coach Leighann Albaugh said. "I feel like we're primed to make a comeback tomorrow. I definitely don't think our team's score shows the level that we are capable of performing at. Tomorrow we are ready to comeback and show our Spider pride in our home event."
Richmond junior Rosario Germino and freshman Sarah Gehrke competed as individuals. Germino shot an 80 and Gehrke carded an 83.
The second and final round of the Spider Fall Invitational is Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
