SpiderTV: Men's Basketball Finishes First Week Of Practice
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's basketball team has finished up one week of practice and third-year head coach Chris Mooney is impressed with what he has seen from both the returnees and the six freshmen.
"One week has gone by and I feel like we're playing well," Mooney said. "There's a lot to get in, in the early stages, especially with young guys who we think will play. The effort, enthusiasm and attention to detail has been there. Everything has been very, very good. It's exciting being in the flow and getting moving. We'll scrimmage a lot at Saturday's practice, so it will be good to see where we are."
Despite being just one week into preseason practice, things are accelerated this season as Richmond opens the season nine days earlier than it ever has in the previous 95 seasons of playing basketball. The Spiders play the first Division I game in the nation on Nov. 5 against Maine at 3 p.m. ET as part of the 2k Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.
Nationally-ranked Memphis and UT-Martin will play in the second game on Nov. 5 at FedEx Forum in Memphis. The winners and losers of the opening round games will meet on Nov. 6.
"We've mapped out the season, we have to prioritize a bit what type of situations you want to address, but we think we've mapped it out so that we will be fully ready for the first game," Mooney said.
