UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Dan Geriot scored a season-high 23 points and freshman Kevin Anderson had a career-high 16 as the Richmond men's basketball team defeated Rice 61-55 on Tuesday night at Reliant Arena.
The Spiders took the lead for good with 12:09 remaining in the first half on a jumper by Geriot, led by four at the half and by as many as 11 in the second half on the way to their second-straight road victory.
"We're playing well on the road, we're feeding off each other's energy," Geriot said. "We dictated the whole game and finished one."
Geriot made 9-of-15 field goals, including 3-of-5 three-pointers as he scored over 20 points for the third time in the last four games. He grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists.
"Dan was terrific, he was able to score inside and he made a couple of big three-point shots," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "His physicality was very good. That's the kind of game that he's capable of having even so soon into his sophomore year."
Anderson's 16 points came on 7-of-9 field goals and 2-of-3 three-pointers. Geriot also grabbed four rebounds and three steals.
"Kevin was great, he scored the ball well, made good decisions and took care of the ball," Mooney said. "We know that he's going to be a very good player and the more and more he does earlier, the better for us."
The Spiders, who had let leads slip away in the final four minutes in two of the last three games, held off a Rice comeback bid on Tuesday night. The Owls did cut the gap to three points (58-55) with 15 seconds left, but two free throws by David Gonzalvez helped ice the win.
"We practiced hard on how we were breaking down the last four minutes of the game," Anderson said. "We practiced that so much and we did a lot better tonight."
Sophomore Kevin Hovde had seven points, five rebounds and three steals, while junior Jarhon Giddings had five points and five rebounds.
The Spiders remain on the road for a trip to Marist on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's game is Richmond's last game outside the city of Richmond until the Atlantic 10 opener on Jan. 9 at La Salle. The one road game during that stretch is a trip to city-rival VCU.
