CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Richmond women's soccer team had its season come to a close Friday evening in the semifinal of the Atlantic 10 Championship. Top-seeded Charlotte made a goal in the 52nd minute stand up in beating the sixth-seeded Spiders 1-0. Richmond ends its season 8-12-2.
Richmond, after defeating third-seeded Duquesne in Thursday's quarterfinals, could not rekindle the magic Friday against the A-10 regular season champions on their home field. Lindsay Ozimek struck for her fifth goal of the season, an unassisted tally, in the 52nd minute. She bombed a shot from 25 yards out past goalkeeper Kate Hudson.
Charlotte (15-4-1) keeper Lauren Brown made six saves in lifting the 49ers to Sunday's A-10 championship game versus the winner of Friday's other semifinal between Dayton and Fordham. Sunday's winner gets the A-10's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Hudson made seven saves for Richmond, which was out-shot 14-10 in the match. Kristen Stalter and Jen Ruhe each took two shots to lead the Spiders, while Ozimek collected a game-high four.
The Spiders were making their first A-10 Championship appearance since 2004, when the current class of seniors were freshmen.
