UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Dan Geriot scored 17 points and Ryan Butler added 11, but Richmond saw a halftime lead evaporate in a 79-65 South Florida win at the Robins Center Wednesday night. The Spiders are back on the hardwood Saturday versus crosstown rival VCU in the Farm Bureau Insurance Black & Blue Classic at the Sigel Center.
Geriot scored 17 on six-of-10 shooting from the field and pulled down a team-high five rebounds. Butler hit four of his five shots from the field and finished with a career-high nine assists. The sophomore turned the ball over just once and added a game-high three steals.
After a jumper by Butler matched the largest Spider lead at 39-35 with 13:32 remaining, visiting South Florida embarked on a 19-2 run over the next four minutes to seize control of the contest.
Dominique Jones, who posted a double-double for the Bulls (6-3), had seven points, two rebounds, a steal and an assist in the game-deciding stretch. He poured in a game-high 30 points and swiped 14 boards.
The Spiders (4-5) clawed their way back and whittled the lead back to six (65-59) thanks to a Butler trey and another three by Kevin Anderson at the 3:23 mark. But Jones scored for USF on the next possession to squash any comeback bid.
David Gonzalvez scored five points and made good on just one-of-nine shots from three-point range - a game removed from going seven-for-10.
Anderson finished with nine points and four assists, while Oumar Sylla added seven points, two assists, a block and two steals.
The Spiders return to action Saturday night at VCU. Tip off at the Siegel Center in downtown Richmond is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game can be seen live on CN8, The Comcast Network.
