LYNCHBURG, Va. - Richmond's 4x400-meter women's relay team broke the school record and senior Beth Crocus broke her own school record in the weight throw at the Liberty Record Bash on Friday.
In the Spiders final tune-up before the 2007 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships, to be held next Saturday in Rhode Island, Richmond broke two school records and had several top-three finishes.
"We had some good things on the women's side with good competition," Richmond women's coach Lori Taylor said. "We broke through on some performances, which is good the weekend prior to the conference meet."
The 4x400 relay team of junior Tara Markey, freshman Monique Hawkins, sophomore Jessica Young and freshman Megan Ney ran a 3:54.74 to finish second. That beat the previous school record of 3:55.18 run by Danielle Eaton, Jasmine Major, Young and Amy Thesing last winter.
Crocus broke her own school record in the weight throw with a heave of 56-feet-10 1/4 to place third. That beat her previous school record of 55-7 1/2. Crocus also finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 38-7 3/4.
Freshman Amy Van Alstine won the mile run in 5:05.96 and freshman Alyssa Mankin took second in 5:06.83.
"To have two freshmen go one and two in the mile is great to see," Taylor said. "They both ran good races, controlled the race, and raced by themselves to the finish."
Sophomore Jasmine Major finished second in the 60-meter dash in 7.72 seconds after running a personal best time of 7.69 in the preliminaries. That was the fastest time in the preliminaries.
Freshman Kristen Crawford threw 44-0 1/2 to finish second in the shot put. Sophomore Karen Guthrie finished second in the 3,000 run in 10:27.54 and junior Shelby Faircloth was fifth in 10:42.60.
Freshman Alyssa Mankin was third in the 800 in 2:27.02 and sophomore Emily Nagle finished fifth in the 800 in 2:29.69. Ney took third in the long jump with a leap of 16-10 1/2.
Junior Kylee Schuler was fourth (5:13.43) in the mile and sophomore Emily Nagle placed sixth (5:33.51).
Freshman Kerry Kelly took fifth in the 60 hurdles in 9.78 seconds. She ran a 9.75 in the preliminaries. Kelly also finished 10th in the 200 dash in 28.11. Freshman JoAnna Ubiwa finished eighth in the 200 dash in 27.53 seconds.
Freshman Heather Roush took sixth in the weight throw (40-2 3/4) and finished 10th in the shot put (34-8 1/2).
Sophomore Stephanie Lapp was 11th in the 200 dash in 29.38 and took eighth in the weight throw with a toss of 35-10.
On the men's side, only a few Spiders competed, but freshman Jon Wilson ran a personal best time of 8:58.57 in the 3,000 to finished fourth.
Freshman Matt Llano finished third in the mile run in 4:29.44 and sophomore Dan Petty was ninth in 4:41.58.
Sophomore Sean Welsh finished fifth in the 800 in 1:58.74, sophomore Derek Jensen finished sixth in 1:59.72, sophomore Greg Hoffman was eighth in 2:00.36 and sophomore Jeff Strojny was 10th in 2:01.41.
"The 800 was a disaster for the men, we just didn't get done what we needed to there," Richmond men's coach Steve Taylor said. "We needed some marks to get into the fast sections of the conference championships, unfortunately it didn't come together the way we needed it to. We'll have to put it together next weekend when we go up to Rhode Island."
Freshman Alex Nourse was 16th in the 200 dash in 24.44 seconds. Sophomore Chris Kondorossy was 11th in the weight throw (34-10 1/4) and took 12th in the shot put (37-8 3/4).
The Spiders return to action on Saturday for the 2007 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House.
