Richmond Men Finish Seventh
The Richmond men's distance medley relay team won an Atlantic 10 title and the Spiders finished seventh as a team at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships today at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House.
Junior Jonathan Molz ran the anchor leg on the Spiders' Atlantic 10 Championship distance medley relay team. |
The Richmond men's team took seventh with 38 points, nine points behind sixth-place Saint Joseph's and 13 points behind fifth-place Fordham. Massachusetts took fourth with 60 points.
"As a team, based on where we're at on the depth chart, we had a good day," Richmond men's coach Steve Taylor said. "We traveled 13 guys, going up against teams that have 32. We need to add more people, but the people we had here competed, and competed well. We just need some hurdlers, sprinters and jumpers. If we could have made up 20 points we are in fourth place."
The distance medley relay team of sophomore Sean Welsh, sophomore Jeff Strojny, sophomore Greg Hoffman and junior Jonathan Molz won the race in 10:23.12. It was the Spiders' first men's Atlantic 10 distance medley title.
"That's a great run for them," Richmond men's coach Steve Taylor said. "Sean gave us the lead running 3:08 for the first 1,200 meters, a good time for him. He ran 61 seconds over his last 400 which blew everyone away."
Strojny ran 51.7 on the 400 leg and Hoffman ran 1:58.2 on the 800. Molz took the baton for the final 1,600 behind La Salle, but he caught up and then pulled away for the victory. La Salle took second at 10:27.25.
"Jon had just run the 1,000 and he was running shoulder to shoulder with the La Salle runner, but he realized the pace was too slow," Steve Taylor said. "He realized that and began pulling away from the field. He gave it all he needed to and ran very comfortably."
Richmond had three freshmen post good showings in the 3,000, led by Andrew Benford who earned the bronze medal with a personal best time of 8:35.59. Fellow freshman Matt Llano took fifth in a personal best 8:43.51 and Jon Wilson was 12th in a personal best 8:56.09.
"We're very excited about that group of freshmen," Steve Taylor said. "To go third and fifth in an event which is very competitive in our conference is very impressive. They were going up against two guys from La Salle who are ranked in the top 12 in the nation. Benford ran a very intelligent race. That's his second indoor race ever."
Junior Hunter Willis ran a personal best time of 14:56.80 - 10 seconds faster than his previous personal best - to take fifth in the 5,000.
"That's a good personal best for Hunter," Steve Taylor said. "He ran 4:40 for the first lap, had a couple of rough laps, but closed it hard. Glad to see him get in under 15 minutes, that was big for him."
Molz finished fourth in the 1,000 in 2:31.04, sophomore Garrett Graham took fifth in a personal best time of 2:32.33 and sophomore Derek Jensen placed seventh in a PR of 2:33.14.
