UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond baseball team used a five-run sixth inning, including two-run homers from Joe Mahoney and Victor Croglio, to defeat Delaware 7-5 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Pitt Field.
It was the Spiders' second-straight comeback victory over Delaware (0-2). Richmond (2-4) overcame a 3-0 deficit in the seventh inning on Friday for a 9-3 win.
"We got our timely hits," Richmond head coach Ron Atkins said. "We played defense and we did a good job pitching."
The Spiders trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth of Saturday's opener, but pushed across five runs on four hits in the frame. Delaware would score one run in the top of the seventh, but Josh Horn pitched 2 1/3 innings of no-hit scoreless relief to earn his first-career save.
"Josh came in and did what he had to do," Atkins said. "He did a great job for us."
Rob Berzinskas went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Kyle Leith pitched the sixth inning, and despite allowing a run that gave the Blue Hens (0-2) a 4-2 lead, Leith earned his second-career victory.
Cameron Brown went 2-for-3 with a RBI and Hank Coogan was 2-for-4.
Delaware took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Spiders came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Vince Riggi reached on an error to start the inning and Coogan reached on a bunt single. Matt McKenna sacrificed the runners over and a sac fly by Andrew Justice, and RBI-single by Brown drove in two runs to give Richmond the lead.
The Blue Hens scored two runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead and then added another run in the sixth to open up a 4-2 lead.
Richmond's sixth inning started off innocently enough with a foul out and ground out, but Brown singled and Croglio homered to right center, tying the game. Austin Reilly drew a walk and stole second, scoring on a RBI-single by Alex Wotring. Mahoney then launched a two-run shot down the right field line into the parking lot to give Richmond a 7-4 lead.
