LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Richmond sophomore Jessica Young ran a personal best and school record 7.32 seconds to tie for ninth in the country in the 60-meter dash at the NCAA National Indoor National Championships on Friday.
Young narrowly missed the finals, which included the eight fastest preliminary times, but she did earn NCAA All-American honors for finishing as one of the top-8 Americans in the event. She was the fifth fastest American in the 60 dash.
"She tied for ninth, so that just bumps out of the finals, but tying for ninth is obviously very impressive," Richmond women's coach Lori Taylor said. "We're very excited about her performance."
Young finished third in heat 1 and was just 0.03 seconds out of qualifying for the finals. The eighth spot in the finals was taken by University of Texas runner Chaunte Bayne (7.31).
"She ran a great race, that was her best performance of the season when it matters the most," Taylor said. "We're very excited for her. This was a great experience and opportunity for her and she just handled it like a very veteran. She handled it very well, that's what you want, especially in her first appearance in the National Championships."
The Columbia, S.C. native was seeded 16th out of 20 runners to qualify for the Nationals in the 60-meter dash. Her provisional qualifying time was 7.33.
Young, who won a gold medal at the World Junior Championships in August, was the first Richmond athlete to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships since Josephine White in 1981. Young's teammate Lindsey Smith was the last Spider to make the NCAA Nationals, qualifying for the Outdoor Championships in 2005.
