University of Richmond sophomore Jessica Young will compete in the NCAA Division I National Championship to be held in Fayetteville, Ark. this Friday and Saturday.
Young will be seeded 16th out of 20 in the 60-meter dash with her provisional qualifying time of 7.33.
"I'm really excited," said, Young who holds six Richmond school records, including the 60-meter dash.
Young, who won a gold medal at the World Junior Championships in August, is the first Richmond athlete to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships since Josephine White in 1981. Young's teammate Lindsey Smith was the last Spider to make the NCAA Nationals, qualifying for the Outdoor Championships in 2005.
"We're happy for Jessica," head coach Lori Taylor said. "She has worked to get herself into the position to qualify for the NCAA Championships. She has gotten much better in the past year and we are excited about her future. She is one of three sophomores to qualify in the 60 meter dash, so that's really good."
Young discovered Monday night that she would be competing in the NCAA National Championships.
"The wait yesterday was excruciating," Taylor said. "The NCAA said they would post the list of the athletes accepted by 8:00 p.m., but they didn't post the entry list until closer to 9:40 p.m. That was a long wait."
