PINEHURST, N.C. - The Richmond women's golf team finished 11th out of 17 teams at the Pinehurst Challenge held Monday and Tuesday at the par-72, 5,978-yard Pinehurst No. 8.
The Spiders were tied for fifth after shooting a 316 on Monday, but carded a 326 in Tuesday's final round to finish at 642, four strokes behind 10th place Maryland. The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes, but due to frost on Monday morning, it as shortened to 36 holes.
"We beat some good teams," Richmond head coach Leighann Rastede Albaugh said. "It was a difficult golf course and it was windy, but the girls handled it well. It's good to be in contention, it's good practice for us to be in. The more we are in contention, the better we will get. It was a good experience."
Richmond senior Ashley Lambert was in contention for medalist honors after carding a 1-over-par 73 in the first round, but she would finish tied for 19th at 156 after carding an 83 Tuesday.
Richmond freshman Victoria Kidder finished in a tie for 27th at 157 (79-78). Freshman Lauren Folgosa tied for 49th at 163 (80-83) and sophomore Rosario Germino carded an 82 Tuesday to finish at 169 (87-82) in a tie for 77th. Senior Alex Latimer tied for 81st at 172 (84-88).
"We had some good rounds, we beat some good teams in one round (Monday) and we can do it again," Rastede Albaugh said. "It's no fluke, it showed the girls that this is what we are capable of. We just have to repeat it now."
Richmond returns to action on March 26-27 at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational.
