GRASONVILLE, Md. - For the second-straight tournament, the Spiders had a rough final nine in dropping into a tie for fifth place at the Lacrosse Homes Collegiate Invitational, played Saturday and Sunday at Prospect Bay Golf Club.
The Spiders shot a 298 in the opening round Saturday, and were tied for third, but shot a 304 on Sunday to finish at 602. St. John's won the tournament, shooting an impressive 580.
"The back nine of the second round hurt us again," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We were in good shape to make a move up the leader board and we gave shots away on the last few holes."
Richmond junior Jordan Utley finished the tournament tied for ninth with a 146 after carding a 2-over 74 Sunday. Utley was tied for third after shooting an even-par 72 in the first round.
Sophomore Tim Courtney tied for 30th with a 151, shooting a 75 Sunday after a 76 on Saturday. Junior Billy Hanes tied for 41st with a 153 (76-77) and sophomore Grant Rafield tied for 49th at 154 (74-80). Senior John Pelet tied for 57th at 155 (77-78).
The Spiders had won this tournament, hosted by Towson University, last spring. Richmond returns to action on Friday and Saturday at the Marshall Invitational, which will be the Spiders third tournament in two weeks.
"We have another quick turnaround to go to Marshall and we just have to be ready to play a full tournament," Decker said.
