Richmond freshman lefthander Matt Zielinski was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after pitching seven shutout innings in the Spiders victory over George Washington on Friday.
Zielinski allowed just five hits - two of which did not reach the infield dirt - and struck out a career-high 10 against the Colonials. The Southampton, Pa. native improved to 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play as the Spiders No. 1 starter.
He has struck out 41 in 39 2/3 innings on the year and has a 3.63 ERA with opponents hitting .218 against him. In Atlantic 10 play he has a 2.08 ERA in two starts, striking out 16 in 13 innings of work.
Zielinski is the third Spider to earn Atlantic 10 weekly honors this season. He joins last week's Player of the Week, junior Hank Coogan, and sophomore Ian Marshall, who was named Pitcher of the Week earlier this season.
The Spiders are 5-1 in Atlantic 10 play and are 17-11 overall, having won eight of the last nine and 13 of the last 16. Richmond plays city-rival VCU on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Diamond. The Spiders host Atlantic 10 leading Xavier, which is 6-0 in conference play, in a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
