Young Wins 400-Meter Dash At UNC Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Jessica Young won the 400-meter dash at the UNC Chapel Hill Invitational held Friday and Saturday.
Young won the event in 54.56 seconds and was joined in the top 10 by fellow Spiders Jasmine Cottle and Tara Markey. Cottle finished sixth in 1:00.16 and Markey took eighth in 2:19.35.
Freshman Amy Van Alstine took second in the 1,500 in 4:34.42 and senior Beth Crocus placed third in the hammer with a toss of 157-feet-8. Freshman Kristen Crawford finished third in the shot put with a toss of 46-1 1/2.
Freshman Heather Roush placed fourth in the discus with a heave of 131-11 and took 12th in the shot put at 36-4. Freshman Megan Ney took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 18-1 1/2 and finished ninth in the high jump (5-2 1/4). Ney took sixth in the 200 dash in 26.49 seconds and freshman JoAnna Ubiwa was eighth in 27.27. Freshman Monique Hawkins placed seventh in the 100 dash in 12.88 seconds
Freshman Kerry Kelly finished sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.93 and took ninth in the 100 hurdles in 17.03 seconds. Ubiwa also finished 14th in the 100 dash in 13.54 seconds.
Sophomore Karen Guthrie placed 10th in the 1,500 in 4:46.96 and sophomore Marissa White finished 12th in the 100 dash in 13.37.
Sophomore Stephanie Lapp finished 10th in the hammer with a throw of 110-4 and was took 19th in the 100 dash (14.30). Freshman Alyssa Mankin took 13th in the 800 dash (2:22.43) and sophomore Emily Nagle finished 19th in 2:28.36.
Richmond's 4x400 relay team finished second in 4:07.50.
On the men's side, the Spiders primarily competed in two events, the 800 and 1,500. Junior Jonathan Molz led a group of eight Richmond runners in the 800, finishing sixth in a time of 1:54.43. Sophomore Jeff Strojny took 14th (1:56.90) in the 800, followed by sophomore Greg Hoffman in 16th (1:56.95), sophomore Sean Welsh was 19th (1:57.41). Sophomore Derek Jensen finished 22nd (1:58.18), freshman Andrew Benford was 25th (1:58.70), sophomore Garrett Graham took 30th (1:59.54) and freshman Matt Llano was 36th (2:01.31).
Freshman Alex Nourse placed 12th in the 200 in 24.36 seconds and finished 21st in the 100 dash in 12.06 seconds.
In the 1,500, Benford led the way with a 14th-place finish in 4:01.88. Llano took 16th in 4:02.61, junior Hunter Willis was 18th in 4:02.96 and freshman Jon Wilson was 20th in 4:03.35. Sophomore Dan Petty took 30th (4:14.83) and junior Mike Stubbs was 32nd (4:15.65).
The Spiders 4x400 relay team finished ninth in 3:31.90.
