HOT SPRINGS, Va. - Freshman Lauren Folgosa shot the best round of her rookie campaign and is the leader in the clubhouse, while Richmond is in third after Friday's first round of the CAA Women's Golf Championship at The Homestead's Old Course.
The second round begins on Saturday at 10 a.m. and the final round of the 54-hole tournament begins Sunday at 9 a.m.
Folgosa shot a 3-over-par 75, including an even-par 36 on the back nine to hold a one-shot over Xavier's Kara Manis and UNCW's Emily Klein.
The Spiders shot a 314 as a team and are three shots behind second-place Xavier (311) and eight shots behind first-place UNC Wilmington (306). Georgia State is in fourth with a 315.
The Tribe of William & Mary (319) will start Saturday's round in fifth place, while James Madison (326) stands at sixth, Towson (336) at seventh and Old Dominion (338) at eighth. Rounding out the scoring after day one is Hofstra (346) and Dayton (360).
Richmond senior Ashley Lambert, who took seventh at the CAA Championship two years ago, and freshman Victoria Kidder are in a six-way tie for sixth after shooting a 77. Freshman Anne Sprick is in 31st place with an 85 and sophomore Rosario Germino is tied for 32nd at 86.
"I'm really proud of my top three, but I'm looking forward to see us put four solid scores together tomorrow," Richmond head coach Leighann Rastede Albaugh said.
The 10-team tournament is being played on the par-72 6,000-yard Old Course at The Homestand, also site of the 2005 CAA Championship. The Spiders are looking to improve on their third-place finish last year. Richmond's best finish in their previous four CAA Championships is finishing second in 2004.
