UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman guard David Gonzalvez (Marietta, Ga.) will remain at the University of Richmond, head coach Chris Mooney announced today. Gonzalvez had previously expressed an interest in transferring, but has decided to remain at Richmond as a member of the Spider basketball team.
"We are excited that David will be a part of our future here," Mooney said. "He had an excellent freshman season - improving as the year went along.I see a tremendous upside to what David and the team can accomplish at Richmond."
Gonzalvez averaged 9.6 points per game, which was second on the team. He led the Spiders in rebounding and was second in assists, steals and minutes played. He scored a career-high 24 points at St. Bonaventure, and posted double-figures 12 times, including three of his last four games. He scored 19 points in a first-round game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Freshman guard Brian Morris (Camp Hill, Pa.) has requested a release for permission to contact other institutions about transferring. Morris averaged 8.1 points in 30 games, with 23 starts.
"While I am disappointed with his decision, we wish Brian well in the future," Mooney said.
