GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Jessica Young broke her own record in the 400-meter dash to qualify for the finals at the NCAA East Regional Championships, being held Friday and Saturday at the University of Florida.
Young ran a school record time of 52.68 seconds which won her heat and was the third-fastest time in the preliminaries.
"Jessica ran well, she looked very comfortable running, obviously it's a great effort," Richmond women's coach Lori Taylor said. "It was quite windy, but she had a good mark."
Young will compete in the finals on Saturday night. The top eight runners in the preliminaries make the finals and the top five runners in the finals earn a trip to the NCAA National Championships.
"Hopefully she will come back and run a good race Saturday," Taylor said.
Senior Beth Crocus finished 24th in the javelin with a throw of 134-feet-2 and will throw the hammer on Saturday.
"Beth throws the hammer Saturday, the event she feels most confident in and feels she has the most chance to get to the NCAA Nationals in," Taylor said. "We hope she gets the mark."
Freshman Kristen Crawford took 28th in the shot put with a throw of 42-8 3/4.
"Kristen has been nurturing her hurt shoulder the last five weeks," Taylor said. "We thought it was alright, but it was effecting her, especially with her preparation. It's quite an honor for her as a freshman to make NCAA Regional Championships and she's somebody we are very excited to have in our program. We are ery proud of her accomplishments and look forward to three more years with her."
