Quick Hitters:
The Spiders have announced one change to their late-season schedule, as the game versus cross-town rival VCU -- scheduled for Tuesday, May 15 at Pitt Field -- has been cancelled. Richmond needs to drop the game in order to get within the NCAA maximum of 56 regular-season contests.
Richmond extends its streak of non-conference games within the Commonwealth of Virginia to 13 and 14 this week with a pair of games at Radford (Tuesday, 3 p.m.) and at James Madison (Wednesday, 4 p.m.).
The Spiders look to build on their two game-winning streak after taking the final pair from UMass and win the A-10 series over the weekend. Richmond is in the midst of a season-long eight-game road trip that continues this weekend at Saint Joseph's. Richmond needs just one A-10 win to clinch a spot in the six-team A-10 Championship.
Alex Wotring batted .429 in the UMass series and had a big offensive day in Sunday's 6-4 win that clinched the Spiders' sixth A-10 series win of the season. He had a hit in every game, including a two-for-four day in the finale with a double and a home run. His RBI double in the second inning put Richmond up 3-0 and his sixth homer of the season extended Richmond's lead to 4-0. He went 3-for-5 Friday with a stolen base.
LHP Matt Zielinski fired his first career complete game to shutdown UMass Saturday, 3-1, and pick up his fifth win of the season (5-3) and fourth in conference play (4-1). The freshman went nine innings, scattering six hits and holding the Minutemen to just a run with two walks, but no strikeouts. Both his 3.55 ERA and 3.05 ERA in A-10 play lead the team.
The Spiders put together three solid starting pitching performances from Alex Hale Friday (7.0 innings, 4, hits, 2 ER, 7 K), Zielinski and Josh Horn Sunday (6.0 innings, 5 hits, 2 ER, 1 K) to earn the series win over UMass.
