Women's Soccer Heads To City-Rival VCU

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Coming off its first win of the season, the Richmond women's soccer team will head across town to city-rival VCU on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. contest at SportsBackers Stadium.
"The VCU-Richmond game is huge," stated Richmond Head Coach Peter Albright. "We are playing for the city championship. This is one of the biggest games of the year and our players really understand that. We are really excited for Thursday. It's going to be a brawl."
Richmond (1-4-1) went 1-0-1 in last weekend's action playing UMBC to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Saturday and blanking VMI 2-0 on Sunday. Sophomore Jen Ruhe notched the Spiders' lone goal against UMBC and sophomores Kelsey Rdzanek and Ruhe each recorded a goal in the Spiders' first win of the season on Sunday over the Keydets.
VCU (2-3-1) is coming off a split 1-1 performance at the VCU/Ewing Sports Invitational where it dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 2 North Carolina and blanked Navy 3-0 on Sunday. Sophomore June Hartman, who netted a hat trick in VCU's win over Navy, currently leads the Rams' attack with four goals and one assist.
Richmond currently leads the all-time series 6-4-1 and has won two of the last four meetings with the Rams. The Spiders' last win over the Rams came in 2004 at First Market Stadium and are split with VCU 2-2-1 at SportsBackers Stadium.
The teams last met in September 2006 at UR Stadium where the Rams inched by with a 1-0 victory off a goal from VCU's Pernilla Jansson in the 63rd minute of play.
