RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond women's soccer goalkeeper Kate Hudson collected six save and Susan Boyer ripped four shots, but a late first-half goal was the difference as VCU defeated the visiting Spiders, 1-0, at Sports Backer Stadium in downtown Richmond Thursday night. The Spiders return home to battle Loyola-Maryland Sunday at 1 p.m.
"It was a great college soccer game," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "We had a lot of chances, but just couldn't find the back of the net. I'm really proud of how our girls played tonight."
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Spiders (1-5-1) owned an 11-8 advantage in shots in the second half, forcing VCU (3-3-1) goalkeeper Emily Niman to make three saves in the final 45 minutes.
Boyer led the team with four of the 15 shots. Kelsey Rdzanek and Jessie Wolfe each collected three.
VCU's game-winner came in the 39th minute as June Hartman headed a ball in from close range past Hudson. Michelle Schuler was credited with the assist. Hartman accounted for four of the Rams' 19 shots.
"We played well and it was a wonderful college soccer game," said Albright. "But we now turn our attention to Sunday and look forward to playing a tough Loyola team."
Kickoff at First Market Stadium versus the Greyhounds is set for 1 p.m.
