UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Jessie Knight netted the game-winner in the 48th minute and junior goalkeeper Kate Hudson came up with six saves for her second straight shutout as the Richmond women's soccer defeated La Salle 1-0 at First Market Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Knight took a pass from sophomore Jen Ruhe at the top of the box, dribbled to her right, made a move to get past the keeper and scored in the empty net from close range. For Knight, it was her first collegiate goal and improved the Spiders to 1-0-1 in Atlantic 10 play.
"Jessie played a great game for us and I'm not just talking about the goal," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "She has made great strides and I really feel that she made her presence felt on the field today."
Coming off a 0-0 double overtime shutout of Fordham on Friday night, Hudson held her second straight opponent off the scoreboard, making six saves. The biggest of which was a diving stop a minute before Richmond struck for the go-ahead goal.
"Hudson was very good in goal today and on one play she was great," said Albright. "That was a save that most college goalkeepers would not have been able to make."
La Salle's Ally Kenney broke free on the left flank and scorched a shot to the near-side corner. Hudson, in a full dive to her right, knocked the ball out of bounds and out of trouble.
The Richmond keeper was aided in her shutout bid by three clutch team-saves on the goal line by Spider defenders early in the match.
"Obviously the three teams saves in the first half were key," said Albright. "Plays like that show that everyone on the field was doing their part and battling hard for 90 minutes."
Jessie Wolfe, who took a game-high five shots, nearly gave the Spiders and early 1-0 lead, but her shot from 20 yards out drilled the crossbar over the head of LU keeper Amy Grant.
La Salle (5-5-0, 0-2-0) owned a 12-11 advantage in shots.
"We played 120 minutes of soccer Friday night and got back at 5 a.m. Saturday," said Albright. "So I was proud of our effort today. It was adverse circumstances with the tough travel on Friday and the long delay today, but I was proud of how we came out and competed hard."
The game, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., kicked off at 4:30 p.m. due a scheduling problem with the game referees.
The Spiders (2-6-2, 1-0-1) are back in action next weekend with a pair of A-10 matches at First Market Stadium. St. Bonaventure visits Friday night (7 p.m.) with Duquesne in town Sunday (1 p.m.).
