HARRISONBURG, Va. - Despite a second-half goal from junior midfielder Jessie Wolfe, the Richmond women's soccer team came up short 2-1 to Hofstra in a close battle on Friday night at the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational.
The Pride (3-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first half as sophomore defender Jess Crankshaw bent a corner kick into the goalmouth that deflected over the line for her first goal of the season. Hofstra tacked on the eventual game-winner in the second half, as Diane Caldwell scored on her own rebound after getting a pass from fellow Irish National Team player Edel Malone.
Richmond's Wolfe cut the lead to 2-1 midway through the second half (74:17), but the Pride was able to hold on for the win to pick up its third straight victory to start the season. Wolfe received the ball from senior midfielder Christine Wrublesky and placed it in the right corner of the net from three yards out to notch her eighth career goal and the Spiders' first of the season.
The Spiders (0-3) will continue tournament play on Sunday with a 1:30 match-up with James Madison, which is on a 4-0 run, allowing just two goals against in four matches, and is fresh off a 3-1 win over Wyoming Friday night.
