UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's basketball team improved to 9-7 overall, 2-1 in the A-10 with a 75-64 win over St. Bonaventure Wednesday night at the Robins Center. Freshman Kevin Anderson scored a career-high 20 points and sophomore Dan Geriot added 23 in helping the Spiders win for the fifth time in six games.
Anderson racked up 18 in the second half, helping to shoot the Spiders out of a cold-shooting first half. Richmond shot just 41.7 percent from the field before the break while the two teams traded baskets. Geriot was able to score 13 points on five-of-seven shooting to give Richmond a 25-24 edge in the locker room.
Behind Anderson, the Spiders revved up the offensive pressure in the second half and were able to push the ball and penetrate, creating opportunities both in the paint and at the free-throw line.
Richmond hit 21-of-30 free throws and finished with 40 points in the paint.
Tyler Relph led the way for St. Bonaventure (6-11, 0-3 A-10) with 20 points and backcourt-mate Zarryon Fereti chipped in 16 points and nine boards
The Spiders, who entered the game ranked 27th nationally in steals per game (9.4), registered their fourth-straight game with 10 or more thefts. Ryan Butler swiped five of them.
Flexing its muscle on the glass as well, Richmond out-rebounded the visitors 36-28. That included an 11-5 edge on the offensive glass, leading to 15 second-chance points. The 5-foot-11 Anderson was the team's leading rebounder with eight.
Butler ended the game with a thunderous fast-break dunk that extended the margin of victory to 11; Richmond's largest lead was 18 with 10:47 to play in the second half.
The Spiders continue their three-game homestand Saturday when La Salle rolls into the Robins Center. The 4 p.m. contest will air live on Comcast SportsNet and is a rematch of last week's triple-overtime thriller that the Spiders won 75-74.
