Women Second, Men Third At George Mason's Patriot Games

FAIRFAX, Va. - The University of Richmond indoor track & field teams competed this weekend in the Patriot Games, hosted by George Mason University. The women scored 87 points to take second place, while the men's 49 points were good for third place.
The women racked up big points in the field events, with X'auntasia Johnson taking third in the triple jump (11.19m) and fourth in the long jump (5.32m). Amanda Caporelli was sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.53m and was eighth in the long jump (5.04m).
Samella Koroma won the weight throw with a mark of 14.21m and threw the shot 11.85m to finish seventh. Heather Roush was second in the weight throw (13.90m) and 10th in the shot, while Monica Howard was ninth in the weight throw.
On the track, Jasmine Major collected a third-place finish in the 200 meter with a time of 25.66 and Jasmine Cottle finished three spots behind her in 25.93. Major also finished with the bronze in the 60 meter hurdles (8.79).
Amy VanAlstine captured the silver medal in the 3,000-meter, racing to the finish in 10:03.44 to lead three Spiders in the race's top-10. Kylee Shuler was sixth (10:25.39) and Shelby Faircloth was eighth (10:51.02).
The Spiders also featured three top-10 finishers in the 1,000-meter with Nicole Traynor taking third (3:00.57), Diana Filtz fourth (3:01.40) and Alyssa Mankin seventh (3:09.38).
On the men's side, Richmond scored big in the distance events on its way to a third-place finish.
Jonathan Molz won the 1,000-meter as half the top-10 was comprised by Spiders. He raced to the finish in 2:32.32, followed by Sean Welsh in second (2:32.92), Jeff Strojny in fourth (2:33.68), Greg Hoffman in ninth (2:36.91) and Derek Jensen in 10th (2:37.30).
Molz also captured a fourth-place finish in the mile (4:17.09).
In the 3,000-meter, Andrew Benford was second (8:27.68), Matt Llano was third (8:34.06) and Tim Quinn was fifth (8:45.25).
The indoor track season continues for the Spiders Feb. 2 at the Carolina Classic, hosted by the University of North Carolina.
