The Richmond women's tennis team opened up its 2008 schedule at Virginia this past weekend, January 26 and 27, where it faced off against no. 39 Virginia and no. 65 Marshall. Erin Clark and Isabel Arana both earned wins for the Spiders as the team went 0-2.
No. 39 Virginia won all but one match against the Spiders going 6-1 overall. Freshman Isabel Arana earned the win for Richmond with a win over UVa's Hampton Williams, 6-0, 4-6, 10-7.
"Isabel Arana played beautifully against UVA," head coach Mark Wesselink said. "For a freshman she showed great poise and consistency."
The following day, the Spiders fell to no. 65 Marshall, 6-1. Sophomore Erin Clark won the sole match for Richmond, beating Jeanne Schwartz 6-3, 6-0.
"Clark, our transfer from Indidana, looked fantastic against Marshall. She hit her opponent off the court and finished strong," Wesselink commented. "She also played some solid doubles. We are lucky she wanted to be a Spider!"
Next up, the Richmond women's tennis team will travel to College Park to take on Maryland February 8 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
