
Rams' Second Half March To Foul Line Puts Down Spiders

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Richmond men's basketball team was tied at the half with Rhode Island and made more field goals than the hosts in the second half (14-12), but a march to the free throw line gave the Rams a 78-64 win on Wednesday night.
Rhode Island (18-3, 4-2 Atlantic 10) improved to 10-0 at home this season thanks to making 17-of-26 free throws in the second half, while Richmond did not take one foul shot after the break. For the game the Rams finished 24-of-36 from the foul line while the Spiders (10-9, 3-3 Atlantic 10) made 4-of-6.
The Spiders were whistled for 27 fouls compared to 11 on the Rams, including Richmond being called for 18 second-half fouls, to Rhode Island's 5.
Sophomore Ryan Butler led the Spiders with 13 points, while sophomore David Gonzalvez had 12 and junior Jarhon Giddings had 10.
Sophomore Dan Geriot had nine points, freshman Kevin Smith had seven and senior Gaston Moliva six for Richmond.
The Spiders trailed by eight (26-18) with nine minutes to play in the first half, but came back to tie the game at the half.
Richmond led by one with 12:28 left on a layup by Jarhon Giddings and trailed by just one with 10:37 left, but over the next 2:37 the Rams were able to build a 10 point lead and never looked back.
Will Daniels led the Rams with 17 points. Kahiem Seawright had 16, Jimmy Baron had 13 and Parfait Bitee had 12.
Richmond heads to Charlotte for a 3 p.m. tipoff on Saturday. The Spiders will face another team that has not lost in its own building. The 49ers are 9-0 in Halton Arena this year.
