RICHMOND - Sherman Logan snuck through the William & Mary line and swatted down a Tribe field goal attempt in overtime, capping another big defensive day for the senior DE and lifting him to CAA Football's Defensive Player of the Week Award. The No. 7 Spiders beat W&M, 23-20, and are headed to the NCAA playoffs.
The Virginia Beach, Va., native led a Spider defensive effort which limited the Tribe to just 12 yards of offense in the first half. The sixth-year senior, who finished the day with four total tackles and a sack for 10 yards, played a huge role during the game's overtime period.
William & Mary took possession first in overtime and managed just two yards, before calling for a 39-yard field-goal attempt. Logan got pressure up the middle and was able to get his left hand on the kick, logging the first blocked kick of his career and giving the Spiders an opportunity for their second-straight trip to postseason play. Richmond then took its ensuing drive five yards before Andrew Howard connected on the game-winning field goal.
Logan's sack of QB Jake Phillips - one of the four times his was dropped on Saturday -- moved Logan into fourth on Spiders' all-time list with 20, tying him with former NFL great Shawn Barber (1994-97) and Justin Oravetz (1995-97).
Logan and the Spiders had pressure on Phillips all afternoon, forcing the All-Conference signal-caller to throw a career-high six interceptions (Phillips' previous high was three) and fumble once. The Tribe was bottled up for just 43 yards rushing on 29 carries to mark the ninth Richmond opponent this season to gain less than 100 yards on the ground. The Spiders lead the CAA and are ranked fifth nationally in total defense (249.5 yards/game).
Richmond (9-3) will host Eastern Kentucky in an FCS Playoff First Round game Saturday at UR Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
