UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
The women's basketball team hits the road for two games this weekend. The first game is the Marshall Herd on Saturday at 3 p.m. Richmond then travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to face the Drexel Dragons on Dec. 22nd at 1 p.m.
Richmond (8-1) has won eight of its last nine, and looks for its first win of the series. The Spiders are coming off a 56-48 loss to Towson last weekend. Sophomore Brittani Shells leads Richmond in scoring with 15.6 ppg.
Marshall (6-3) is coming off a 91-50 victory over Houston Baptist. Tynikki Crook scored a game-high 17 points.
"Marshall is a very balanced team," head coach Michael Shafer said. "They are a well-coached team that executes their offense efficiently."
The first and only meeting of the series the Herd won on a last second three-pointer in overtime, Dec. 28, 2006.
"Marshall has athleticism and skill at every position," said Shafer.
Richmond then travels to Philadelphia, Pa., where they will face the Drexel Dragons Dec. 22nd at 1 p.m.
Drexel (3-4) is coming off a 55-49 loss to Army, and faces Penn on Friday before Richmond's game Monday. Junior forward Gabriela Marginean is leading the nation in scoring with 27.1 ppg.
"The majority of what they run offensively looks to get her the ball in positions she can score," said Shafer. "Drexel plays a similar style to us, so there will be a little familiarity with what they are doing. We are playing very good basketball teams on their home floors. It's a great challenge and we hope to end for Christmas break on a positive note."
The Spiders return to action when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. For the Crimison Tide Holiday Classic. Richmond faces Ball State at 1 p.m. in the first game.
