
Spiders Hold Off Duquesne To Move Into Tie For Third In Atlantic 10

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Sophomore David Gonzalvez scored 17 points, shooting 5-for-6 from three-point range to lead the Richmond men's basketball team to a 69-66 victory at Duquesne on Saturday night.
The Spiders led by as many as 13 with 6:33 left in the game, and held off a late Duquesne comeback bid to win for the ninth time in the last 13 games. Richmond (13-10, 6-4 Atlantic 10) moved into a three-way tie for third place in the Atlantic 10 with Rhode Island and Temple.
Sophomore Dan Geriot scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while freshman Kevin Anderson had 11 points and a career-high eight assists. Senior Oumar Sylla had 10 points.
Richmond snapped Duquesne's three-game winning streak and held the Dukes (16-8, 6-5 Atlantic 10) to 20 points below their season scoring average.
The Spiders held Duquesne to 38.3 percent shooting, while making 51 percent from the floor and 68.8 percent from three-point land.
Richmond had a total of 15 turnovers in its previous two games but had its hands full early-on with a Duquesne team that led the Atlantic 10 in turnovers forced, causing 19.5 per game. The Spiders coughed it up on their first four possessions and fell behind 7-0.
Richmond would only turn it over eight more times the rest of the game, settling down to make a 22-8 run for a 22-15 lead with 6:13 left in the first half. The Spiders led by 10 (34-24) in the final minute of the first half and took a 34-27 lead into the locker room.'
The Spiders never trailed over the games final 33:29 and led by as many as 13 in the second half. Richmond had a 64-57 lead with 1:24 remaining, but Duquesne would close within one on a three-pointer with eight seconds left. Anderson made two free throws to get the lead back up to three and Duquesne's potential game-tying three-pointer was off line at the buzzer.
Bill Clark led Duquesne with 15 points and Reggie Jackson had 12. Jackson, who averaged 17.7 during the Dukes' winning streak, was held to nine points -- all but two in the final 3:11 of play, as Duquesne tried to rally from a 12-point deficit with 5 1/2 minutes remaining.
The Spiders continued to hold the opposition's top scoring threats in check. Richmond held Duquesne's top two scorers, Shawn James and Kojo Mensah, to eight points apiece.
Richmond returns home to host Charlotte on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
