Kevin Anderson Named Atlantic 10 Rookie Of Week For Third Time In Last Five Weeks

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond freshman point guard Kevin Anderson was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the third time in the last five weeks after averaging 9.5 points, 6.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds in two games last week.
Anderson, who is sixth in the Atlantic 10 in minutes per game (34.04 mpg), scored 11 points and dished out a career-high eight assists in 35 minutes of action in the Spiders win at Duquesne on Saturday. He shot 3-of-6 from the field, including 2-for-2 from beyond the three-point arc. Anderson scored eight points and had four assists in 38 minutes against Saint Louis on Feb. 10.
The Duluth, Ga. native and former Peachtree Ridge High standout is tied for the team lead and fourth in the Atlantic 10 in steals (1.74 spg) and is 10th in the league in assist/turnover ration (1.58). He leads the team and is 14th in the Atlantic 10 in assists (3.09).
This is the third Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor for Anderson and the fourth time a Spider has earned the award this season. Anderson also received the Award on Jan. 20, after scoring a career-high 20 points and grabbing a career-high eight rebounds in a win over St. Bonaventure, and Feb. 3 after scoring a game-high 17 points in the Spiders' win at Charlotte.
Freshman Kevin Smith was also named A-10 Rookie of the Week after scoring a career-high 13 points in a win over Virginia Tech on Jan. 3. The Spiders have four different players on the roster who have earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors over the past two seasons. Anderson, Smith and the team's top two leading scorers, sophomores Dan Geriot and David Gonzalvez, have received the honor in the last two seasons.
The youthful Spiders, with 81 percent of their scoring coming from freshmen and sophomores, have won nine of the last 13 games to improve to 13-10 overall. Richmond is 6-4 in the Atlantic 10 and tied for third place.
The Spiders return to action on Wednesday when they host Charlotte at 7 p.m.
